The beginning of the Hawks men's basketball season notched two wins against WVU Potomac State College before traveling to Cape Fear Community College in Wilmington, NC for the Tyrek Coger Classic on November 10th and 11th. The Hawks won 76-70 over Brunswick CC on Friday, November 10th, and lost to Cape Fear CC 52-82 on Saturday, November 11th. On the road again this past weekend, Hagerstown traveled to New Rochelle, NY to play Monroe College on Friday, losing 56-90 and losing to Sullivan County CC, 86-93 on Saturday.
The largely freshmen based Hawks team offensivly has been adjusting to a new, fast-paced and physical level of competition. Playing out of conference games is offering the team in-game learning experience to offset frustration and develop patience in play execution. "We have many players with moves, who can run the floor and shoot the lights out, we just need to work together and better communicate to consistently control the game tempo," stated Head Coach Bernard Hopkins. "This team has shown grit when it mattered... to work together, to pull through, and to win. We just need to trust in the process and continue to strive to put ourselves in winning situations."
With an overall record now at an even 3-3, the Hawks are looking towards a rematch with the Monroe Mustangs at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 25th in the Jim Brown Classic hosted by Hagerstown Community College. Historically this mixer, named in memory of long-time Head Men's Basketball Coach and HCC Athletic Director, Jim Bown, invites competitive and talented East Coast NJCAA teams to play in a two day matchup over Thanksgiving weekend. Along with Atlantic Cape Community College, Cape May, NJ, and Monroe College, New Rochelle, NY, Allegany College of Maryland, Cumberland, MD is rounding out the teams in the mixer. The games will be start at 1:00 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday and the community at large is invited to come and enjoy fast-paced collegiate basketball at its best.
