Upon returning home from New Jersey on September 28th after a 1-0 loss to out-of-conference Mercer County CC, the Lady Hawks were poised get back on the winning track as they prepared to face two conference opponents in Carroll CC and CCBC Catonsville. And that is precisely what happened as they once again did not allow a goal on defense throughout either game. Winning by a combined 12 goals, the 5-0 and 7-0 defeats came on the backs of many players in Hagerstown's starting lineup.
In the first matchup against Carroll CC, the Lady Hawks had 5 different goal scorers on the afternoon. Peyton Miller, Angie Ayala-Luna, Amelia Beck-Schmeider, Makayla Wright, and Brianna Cleary each tacked on a goal to help secure the win for Hagerstown. That has been a major difference in recent years when compared to this year as the Hawks offer a litany of players that can finish offensively and opposing teams cannot simply attempt to limit 1 or 2 players anymore. Having a multi-pronged attack has enabled the Lady Hawks to take advantage of other team's weaknesses on the pitch in ways they never have before.
Most recently, the Hawks faced off against conference foe, CCBC Catonsville in a Thursday matinee yesterday (10/2). It was 2 players in particular that stuck out from a performance perspective: sophomore captain Peyton Miller, and freshman reserve Chloe Boswell. Miller tacked on 4 goals herself throughout the 90 minute match while Boswell added 3 assists, playing the part of a true point guard to steal a basketball analogy. When you have reserve players that can come and give quality minutes, that is truly ideal. And Hagerstown has truly found that on their squad. Other notable performances include freshman Averie Hess' first goal of the season and Makayla Wright adding 2 more goals to her season total of 12.
Hagerstown CC Women's Soccer have 3 of the top goal scorers in the country in Ayala-Luna (T2nd-15), Miller (T2nd-15), and Wright (5th-12). They aim to make some real noise in the postseason as the end of the regular season begins to draw near.
After a much-needed weeklong respite, the Lady Hawks will be back on the road next weekend as they travel to North Carolina to face a pair of non-conference opponents in Cape Fear CC on Friday (10/10) at 4PM, and Wake Tech CC on Saturday (10/11) at 12PM.
