FALL SPORTS COME TO AN END, BUT THE FUTURE REMAINS BRIGHT
With the Hagerstown CC Women's Volleyball team's DII Region 20 championship bid falling just short on Sunday evening (11/3), that wrapped up the 2024 Fall sports slate outside of Nationals for XC who will be competing this coming weekend in Richmond, VA at Pole Green Park. The VB team had a tremendous run first beating Potomac State in straight sets and then proceeding to beat Montgomery College in 5 sets in the second round. Undefeated Harford CC simply was too strong in the end though, as HCC fell in the championship by a score of 3-0. It was a great season for the Lady Hawks and finishing as the Region 20 runners up is a worthy consolation prize. Sophomore Paige Elliott and Freshmen Emily Gasaway and Alaryss Medina earned all-tournament team honors. They will be looking to return a few players as sophomores next year in hopes of making another strong run. Congrats on your accomplishments, girls!!
The Hagerstown WSOC team played in the DI Region 20 quarter final at Montgomery College against the Raptors this past Saturday, 11/2, and unfortunately also fell short losing by a score of 4-3. The entire match was both teams taking turns trading blows with the game deadlocked at the half. Freshman Forward True Benshoff was responsible for the first 2 goals for HCC and Kendra Wotchuin was the same for the Raptors with a score of 2-2 at the break. Wotchuin then scored a 3rd goal in the 60th minute to put them up 3-2 with 30 minutes remaining. HCC's Lexi Linetty then shot a ball from way outside the 18 and over the MC's goalie's head to even the score with 12 minutes to play. Wotchuin had the clutch gene equipped in this match though as she scored once again for the Raptors with 6 minutes remaining to close the game out, giving Montgomery the win. This team is also very young and will return many capable sophomore starters next year in hopes for another postseason run at what would be HCC's first Women's Soccer DI Region 20 championship.
The Hagerstown MSOC team concluded their season last Wednesday, 10/30, losing to Harford CC in the first round of the DI Region 20 semi final by a score of 7-0. Although the game did not end in the way the team had hoped, the 2024 season was a clear indicator as to where the HCC MSOC is going. Going from an 0-13-1 record in 2023 to an overall 10-9 record in one rebuilding year is a major accomplishment and is a sign of many good things to come under Coach Joe Mills. The Hawks will be returning a large amount of sophomore players next year while adding to the arsenal with new recruits already verbally committed to join the green and white.
Good things are on the horizon for Hagerstown Community College fall athletics, and we are thankful for the fans that have stuck by them throughout their respective seasons. Best of luck to all sophomore players moving on to their next endeavors and we look forward to seeing what's next for HCC when the 2025 season rolls around.
As always, #FlyHawksFly!!!!
