Hawks look to sophomore leadership for a strong season
Hagerstown Community College Women's soccer program is entering its sixth season of playing Division I NJCAA collegiate soccer. Last season, the Hawks were 6-10-1 under the direction of Head Coach, Clifton Williams. Williams expects the team to better last season's results in achieving more wins. The team is scheduled to play eighteen games this season, twelve away and six at home, with a total roster of 15 players.
Returning for the Hawks will be first-team Maryland JUCO and NJCAA Region XX selection, Marissa Fouke, a graduate of Smithsburg High School, MD, who scored 8 goals last season, Diana James, a graduate of South Hagerstown High School, MD, who scored 5 goals with 4 assists, and NJCAA Honorable Mention, Mikaila Ek, a graduate of Berkeley Springs High School, WV, with 7 goals and 2 assists in the 2021 season. Sophomore, Ava Burger, a Clear Spring High School, MD graduate, is a strong defender with lots of speed to help support the back-line of the defense.
There are four returning sophomore captains who were chosen by their teammates to help mentor the team on and off of the field. Leah Stevens, a graduate of Littlestown High School, PA, is a sturdy defender/midfielder that carries the responsibility of being the link between the back line and offensive players. Madison Milburn, a graduate of James Wood High School, VA, is a forward/attacking midfielder that supports her teammates in assisting and scoring goals. Abby Sprecher, a graduate of Smithsburg High School, is a defender who plays smart, controlling the back line. Molly Brashears, also a graduate of Smithsburg High School, plays outside midfielder/defender, using her speed to chase down breakaways and regain possession. These four captains consistently work hard to strengthen the team as a whole, and are projected to lead the team to more wins throughout the season.
HCC added seven new women's soccer recruits to the roster for the 2022 Fall season. From Clear Spring High School, Kayda Shives is a quick forward that the team will look to for creating scoring opportunities. Carlie Collis, a graduate of Jefferson High School, WV, plays defense with speed, and can close down offensive attacks. Chloe Bolland a graduate of from Washington County Technical High School, MD, plays forward and will be looked to for collecting and distributing the ball to her teammates. Brianna Clever is a graduate of Clear Spring High School, whose role as a midfielder/defender will assist in controlling the pace of the game. Sydney Timmons, a graduate of Greencastle Antrim High School, PA, plays outside midfielder and her attitude and determination encourages the team through the toughest times. Kadenn Martin, a graduate of James Buchanan High School, PA, is a solid forward/midfielder, always looking for passing and scoring opportunities. Gracie Walker, a graduate of Boonsboro High School, MD, is the goalkeeper and will do some exciting things in the goal this year. These freshmen players are already working very well with the team.
"The team is looking pretty good this year and we are looking to do some great things", commented Coach Williams, "it is important that we play as a team and work, but working hard for each other is the key to achieving success."
