Hawks Outdoor Track & Field looking toward the finish line
Hagerstown Community College Outdoor Track and Field is looking toward the NJCAA Division I Men's & Women's National Outdoor Track & Field Championship being held at Brown Stadium in Monroe Louisana, May 16th through 18th.
Qualified and set to compete in the women's high jump in Monroe, Indoor National NJCAA high jump champion, Gabby Cook is flying on an 11 meet winning streak in 2024, winning again at the Johns Hopkins Loyola Invitational on April 20th (1.70 meters.) Cook, who competed last year in the national championship in Hobbs, New Mexico, qualified for this year's championship early in the outdoor season at the Towson Spring Opener, jumping 5'7". She is currently ranked 1st in the NJCAA through April 24th in women's high jump, with a scored performance of 1.74m (5-8 1/2 feet), achieved at George Mason University (April 6th), and currently holds the HCC indoor women's high jump record.
Also qualifying for this year's outdoor championship after competing at the Towson Spring Invitational were Brayden Ecker, Mikaila Ek, and Rebecca Tellez. Ecker, is currently tied for 7th in the NJCAA in men's pole vault, with a scored performance of 15-5 at the Stevenson Invitational (April 12th). He earned 5th place in men's pole vault at this year's national indoor meet in Gainesville, Forida, and currently holds the HCC men's indoor pole vault record of 15-4 1/2. Mikaila Ek, also returning to the outdoor national championship for a second time, is currently ranked 5th in the NJCAA in women's pole vault with a scored performance of 11-7 3/4. Ek also competed in this year's indoor championship, earning 3rd place with a vault of 11-2 1, breaking her own HCC women's indoor pole vault record. Rebecca Tellez ran the 5,000 meter at Towson, in 18:51.48 qualifying her for the national meet. She is sitting in the 29th slot nation-wide.
Michaela Carney, who also competed and placed 12th in the women's pole vault at the indoor national meet in Gainesville, qualified for the outdoor championship at the Stevenson Invitational (April 12th), jumping 10-6 and is currently ranked 16th in the NJCAA.
On Saturday, April 27th, the Hawks are competing at the Paul Kaiser Classic at Shippensburg University, and the men's 4X800 relay team is traveling to Kentucky to compete in the Rick Erdmann Twilight Invitational at Eastern Kentucky University.
