HOBBS, N.M. — Hagerstown Community College sophomore Micaela Fleetwood stands in ninth place after four of seven events in the heptathlon were completed Thursday at the NJCAA Division I national championships at New Mexico Junior College.
Fleetwood, a North Hagerstown graduate, opened the day with a 10th-place finish in the 100 hurdles in 16.48 seconds, her best effort in the event in a heptathlon. She also was 10th in the high jump, clearing 4 feet, 7 inches, then took seventh in the shot put with a throw of 30-5¼ before closing her day with the fastest 200 she has ever run, a 26.70 that was good for 10th.
Fleetwood scored 2,388 points — her best opening-day performance in five career heptathlons — and will compete in the javelin, long jump and 800 on Friday. An eighth-place finish or better would give her a third NJCAA All-American honor. She finished seventh in both last year's heptathlon and the indoor pentathlon earlier this year.
