Hagerstown enjoys first win of the season, 2-1 vs. Christendom College
Hagerstown CC men's soccer hosted Christendom College on Saturday, September 17th for a 2:00 p.m. match.
The Hawks, hampered by early season injuries, made no excuses as they stared into the face of a match where they would be start and play only 10 men with no available substitutes. Alex Tema Abanke opened the scoring in the 17th minute on an assist from Jose Adubiry. In the 46th minute, Asbel Agustin Garcia scored, what ended up being the game winning goal, off of a rebounded free kick taken by HCC's Danilo Melendez Escobar just outside of the penalty area. As the second half wore on, Christendom pressed and attacked Hagerstown's back line, finally breaking through at the 74th minute, with Joe Madigan scoring a P.K. off of a Hagerstown foul in the box. Hagerstown's possession style of play and improved defending suited them well throughout the day as they were able to keep Christendom off tempo.
The Hawks hung on to win 2-1 over the Crusaders, and the win solidified Hagerstown's Men's Soccer resilience to persevere through adversity, playing the game they love to the best of their ability. Hawk's Men's soccer first year Head Coach, Whitney Minnis said after the game, "My guys deserved that win! We continue to improve and grow our team chemistry. We are building a culture and expectation of doing things the right way to be successful. We will continue to train and work hard throughout the season, regardless of our challenges ahead."
Alex Abanke Tema was voted unanimously by his teammates as Man-of-the-Match.
