Hawks Celebrate Sophomore Day with Emphatic Win
With no score until the 80th minute, Hagerstown CC Men's Soccer broke the silence with a goal by Freshman Midfielder, Danilo Melendez (10), who slotted the ball past the Skipjack's keeper, upon receiving a layoff pass from Freshman Midfielder, Anthony Mares (14). After 18 first half shots on goal, and another 12 shots in the second half, the Hawks were relieved to finally pull ahead, and the scoring didn't stop there. Freshman Forward, Hector Alvarez (25), scored his first collegiate goal off of an assist from Freshman Midfielder, Gabriel Diaz Mejia (8). Sophomore Forward, Bryce Block (18), put the Hawks up 3-0, scoring his team leading 5th goal of the season, off of an assist from Freshman Midfielder, Xavier Mejia (21), and with less than a minute to play, Mejia scored after receiving a pass from Freshman Defender, Addison Eckardt (4), striking from 25 yards out, hitting the back of the net and closing out the game at 4-0 for the Hawks.
"At half time, I had to remind the guys that we've got to work a little harder and do more of the little things right," said Coach CJ. "Goals have been hard to come by, and we have been stressing it a little lately. We've been reminding them that we've been creating plenty of chances, but it doesn't have to be a pretty goal to count...we just need it in the back of the net. They responded well to that today."
Sophomore Goalkeeper Christian Blazes got his first career shutout, and finished with 6 saves on the night. He currently ranks 2nd in the nation in saves with 113, and 3rd all-time in Hagerstown CC Men's Soccer history with 218 Career Saves.
The Hawks will be on the road on Thursday in Region XX Division 1 playoffs against Harford Community College at 5pm
