Miscues on set pieces placed the Hawks behind 3-0 during the first half to Harford Community College on Thursday, when Hagerstown's freshman midfielder, Xavier Mejia (21) stepped up and scored a free kick from 25 yards out, bringing the Hawks back to within 2 goals in the 32nd minute.
The Hawks conceded again early in the second half off of a set piece, but responded 12 minutes later when freshman forward, Jared Martinez-Sandoval (22) scored on a pass from freshman midfielder Conal Mathews (15) at the top of the 18. Martinez-Sandoval struck the ball hard and low off of the post and into the back of the net, to cut into the Fighting Owls lead.
A few minutes later, freshman midfielder, Matias Meza(13) was on the receiving end of an aerial cross from Xavier Mejia, where Meza volleyed the ball out of the air past the Harford goalkeeper, to bring the Hawks within one goal with 25 minutes to go in the match.
The Hagerstown comeback fell short when a ball was deflected into their own goal with 11 minutes remaining.
Freshman goalkeeper Christian Blazes finished with 12 saves for the Hawks.
Hagerstown travels to Cecil College on Tuesday, August 31st, match time 6:00 p.m.
