Entering this year, Matczko wil be in his 25th season of coaching in the region and conference, serving 11 years as Assistant and Head Men's Basketball Coach at CCBC Essex, and 13 years as Head Men’s Basketball coach at Baltimore City Community College (BCCC).
Matczko has amassed over 400 wins and thirteen championships, including five Region 20, two Region 20 District titles, three Maryland JUCO Tournament Championships and three Maryland JUCO regular season titles. In 2012, he led BCCC to the NJCAA Division II national championships in Danville, IL, finishing #6 in the country. The following season, the team's NJCAA status moved up to Division I, and in 2018, BCCC returned to the national championships in Hutchinson, KS, after winning the district championship in Brooklyn, NY, defeating ASA College. Following his departure from BCCC in 2019, he spent two seasons as Assistant Men's Basketball Coach at Harcum College in Philadelphia, PA.
Career accolades include: Maryland JUCO Coach of the Year in 2010 and 2014; MD JUCO Coaches Association Coach of the Year in 2012: NJCAA Region 20 Coach of the Year in 2012, 2014, and 2015; and NJCAA District 16 Coach of the Year in 2012 and 2018. In addition to his time spent in the junior college ranks, Matczko returned to Edgewood High School (Edgewood, MD) for three separate head coaching stints, and in 2006, led the Rams to an undefeated conference championship, and was named Baltimore Sun Coach of the Year in Harford County.
Coach Maczko has a reputation as an excellent recruiter, reviving ailing programs and transforming them into championship-caliber, both on and off the court. He has placed over 20 student-athletes in NCAA Division I programs and another 30 plus in NCAA Division II programs. He has coached 9 All-Americans in his career, and a considerable number of players named to past All Maryland JUCO and All Region 20 teams.
Maczko earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in computer science and mathematics from the State University of New York at Potsdam, where he played for legendary coach Jerry Welsh, a finalist for the Naismith Hall of Fame in 2025 and 2026. In 1999, Maczko earned a Master of Science degree in Physical Education and Exercise Science, with a concentration in Sports Management, from Western Maryland College (now known as McDaniel College).
Before changing careers to full-time coaching, Maczko enjoyed a highly successful 25-year career as an engineer and senior staff member at Lockheed Martin. In 1998, he was named Engineer of the Year, and as a director in 2008, he led the Team of the Year, receiving the President’s Award, the highest award in Lockheed Martin.
