Hawks Women's Soccer Win Overtime Thriller in Season Opener

Story by Phil Marshall

The Hawks Women's Soccer Team started their season on the road against the Potomac State College of WVU Catamounts.

Scoring from the Hawks began in the 18th minute when Megan Smith beat the keeper on a penalty kick.

The game was neck and neck the entire way when Taylor Neff scored in the 80th minute for the Hawks 2nd goal of the contest.

Down one, late in the going, Ryleigh Mckinnon assisted Taylor Neff in the 88th minute to give her two goals in an 8 minute period that resulted in a tie game that led to overtime.

"I told the players you have worked very hard for this moment," Coach Clifton Williams said. "I was very excited to see how the team has transitioned into the first game of the season with 11 players."

30 seconds into the overtime period, Megan Smith assisted Emily Askin for the game winner.

Coach Williams was very pleased with his team's performance and how they responded against tough odds.

"Not only did they respond, each player elevated their game to another level," Williams said. "I believe their hard work and dedication truly is paying off."

The Hawks look to continue their winning ways as they head to Frederick CC on Thursday September 5th at 2:30 PM.
