It has been said that defense in sports is where games are won, and when Head Coach Bernie Semler was asked about this year's women's basketball team, there is one defensive stat that sets the Hawks aside from any other. "Sixty-three charges is almost unheard of," commented Semler. "When you look at women's basketball teams across the board, you would be hard-pressed to find one with 63 total charges, and it shows that this team has really bought into the idea of playing defense." To Coach Semler's point, when the Hawks have settled into solid defense, they have had success and come away with conference wins.
With two regular season games left before the MD JUCO tournament, hosted by Hagerstown, starting on Thursday, February 14th, the Hawks need to rely on their defense to stay ahead of Anne Arundel in the top eight tournament race. At 10-9 overall, and 4-6 in the MD JUCO, wins against the Garrett Lakers on February 1st, and the Howard Dragons on February 6th would all but guarantee a place for the Hawks in the top 8 MD JUCO conference women's teams.
