Smith Records Hat Trick in Collegiate Debut, Hawks Down Fairfax

Hagerstown, Md. -The Hagerstown Community College men's soccer team kicked off the 2013 season, exploding for eight goals in a non-conference victory over Lord Fairfax Community College.

Sophomore Bobby Matusek put the Hawks on the board in the first minute when he re-directed a corner kick into the net. Just two minutes later freshman Jonah Smith would net his first goal on the afternoon after he received a well-played through ball from classmate Akheem Riley. Freshman Yusuf Bodirov would tally a goal, giving HCC a 3-0 lead in the first eight minutes. Freshman Jacob Hargett launched a long throw-in where Bodirov volleyed it into the upper corner of the goal.

In the 23rd minute, Smith would strike again after Riley slipped him a ball in behind the defense, where he would place it past the LFCC keeper. Freshman Patrick Creadick extended the first half lead when took a pass from sophomore Matt Suddith and rocketed a shot from 20 yards out.

The second half would be controlled by Hagerstown as well, as Bodirov scored just one minute after the whistle, when he received a flick from teammate Leland Creadick and put his shot past the keeper. In the 51st minute Riley would steal the ball deep in the Cannons end and make the visitors pay by extending the lead to 7-0.

LFCC would avoid the shut-out after an HCC defender turned the ball over, resulting on a breakaway that would be put past keeper Brandon Wingfield.

Smith would cap off his first collegiate hat trick in the 82nd minute after Bodirov played him a corner kick which he beat a defender end line and then snuck his shot in past the near post.

Sophomore goalie Adam Carrier would start the match and record one save, while the second half would be split by freshman Ethan Waters and Wingfield and no saves were needed.

The Hawks return to action on September 4 when they host MDJUCO Division I opponent Cecil College at 3:30pm.
