In 1984 I played basketball for Coach Jim Brown, and at that time there was no golf program. My grandfather, Richard Schultz, athletic director at South Hagerstown High through the 1960's and 70's, had started Washington County Junior Golf. In the summer of 1983, I was 18 years old, and he started a club team at HCC. We recruited a few guys and the program began. The program was on and off until 1998, when I returned from mini tour play in Florida. Working with a group of local businessmen to start a pro am that would yield some sponsorship dollars, in 2000, I was able to promote the team, and was given college approval to compete as a Division II program in the NJCAA and Maryland JUCO. We awarded scholarships from $500 to $1000 depending on how many kids we had. For the first 6 or 7 years I drove the kids on my own dime. I believe in 2006, Bo Myers took over as HCC athletic director, and required a class be taught and for my position to be paid. At that time my kids needed me at home, so we opened an assistant coach position to travel and organize the team. We have graduated countless players, many of whom have continued playing golf at four year schools. We have raised over $60,000 over the years, and have offered many local kids the opportunity to attend HCC with scholarships.
