It is the time of year when once again the top 16 teams prepare for the historic MD JUCO basketball tournament. Prior to 1974, the conference was "Tri State Athletic Conference" which started in 1958, later becoming MD JUCO in May of 1973. The first MD JUCO Basketball Tournament was held in 1974. Hagerstown was the first winner in 1958. At the time Hagerstown was also in region 15, as Region 20 was formed in March 1973.
The tournament is a four day event, starting on Thursday, February 14th, and lasting through the 17th.
The women's quarterfinals will be held on the 14th with games being played at 12, 2, 4, and 6 p.m. The men's quarterfinals will be held the next day on the 15th, with games taking place at 12, 2, 4, and 6 p.m. The women's semifinals will follow on Saturday, the 16th with games being played at 1 and 3 p.m., followed by the men's semifinals at 5 and 7 p.m. Both finals will take place on Sunday, the 17th with the women playing at 1 p.m. and the men playing at 4 p.m.
The current prospective teams for the men's tournament are Baltimore City, Prince George's, Harford, Allegany, Garrett, Southern Maryland, Montgomery, and Cecil. It will be a scramble for the top for Prince George's, Harford, and Allegany who share a 8-2 conference record.
The women's prospects for the tournament include Harford, Chesapeake, Frederick, Baltimore City, CCBC Catonsville, Montgomery, Southern Maryland, and our very own Hagerstown vying to stay in the top 8. The spotlight will be on Hartford, and the team that can give them their first loss in the conference.
